GEORGE’S FAMILY ROOM IS SLEEK AND ELEGANT YET PRACTICAL

When George Man and his family moved into their home in 2019, they knew they’d taken on a ‘doer upper’ that would be a labour of love. So, they rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in. The result is a stunning transformation that has turned a dated home into a contemporary family space that suits their busy lifestyle. Step by step, George has been sharing his family’s renovation journey on Instagram @mansyard

To create a large open plan room where the family could spend most of the day, George and Nataja knocked down the wall between the kitchen and dining room, removed a glass lean-to and small extension and replaced this with a wraparound extension featuring large bi-fold doors leading into the garden. Then they set about creating a fresh modern space with a cool industrial influence.

Minimalist with natural vibes

Looking to make the most of the light filled space and clean lines, they opted for walls painted in light grey with contrasting dark grey and bold orange colour block detailing. Then they added recessed spotlights which provide adequate task and ambient lighting whilst maintaining their desired streamlined look.

When it came to the flooring, they wanted to introduce the warm tones of wood so they turned to the Palio Express collection. After considering a number of samples at home, they decided on Warm Ash from the Korlok range, with its neutral honey tones and subtle straight grain textures.

Quick and easy installation

An easy-fit range that is perfect for DIYers, Korlok is designed to be installed using only a few basic tools. With a rigid core construction that simply clicks into place, Korlok forms a strong and stable floor that can be installed over uneven floors without extensive preparation, another benefit that was appreciated by these time strapped renovators.

George said: “We opted for the Korlok range as we loved how easy it was to install. We were already familiar with click-locking flooring so we were confident we could achieve a great result. As we wanted the same flooring to flow seamlessly from the hallway through to our new kitchen diner and highlight the views into the garden, we laid the planks in a straight line from the front door all the way to the new bi-fold doors.

“We love the result! The floor adds warm tones to our cool grey colour scheme and is hard wearing enough to cope with little feet running around. But not only that, it’s so easy to clean and if – when – the kids spill food or drink or crayon, we don’t have to worry because we can simply wipe it up and get on with having fun and making precious memories!”
