SADIE’S COLOURFUL HOME INSPIRES PLAY

From colour blocking to vibrant wallpaper and ombre paint effects on furniture, Sadie Mackie’s creative home is full of colour. When she needed to replace the tired carpet in her daughters’ bedroom she turned to Palio Express by Karndean for a floor that could deal with busy kids and still look great.

Walls, furniture and accessories throughout Sadie’s home sport a mix and match of beautiful pastel shades which are guaranteed to raise anyone’s spirits. In fact, the only thing the Sadie’s family love more than colour is books and they share their journey of discovery on Instagram @raisingsmallreaders.

Hard working rooms need practical flooring

There’s always something going on at Sadie’s busy home, usually focused on her two daughters and two dogs. In the girls’ bedroom and upstairs hallway, the neutral carpet had seen better days so Sadie wanted to change it for flooring that would look amazing without hours of cleaning.

Sadie told us: “Carpet seemed like such a good idea before I got two dogs and had two babies. Then it desperately needed replacing for something more practical that would also sit nicely against the bold colours in our home.”

A room designed for little hands (and feet)

Looking for a natural look to complement the restful pink and lilac colour scheme in the girl’s bedroom and the cheerful sorbet shades in the hallway, Sadie turned to the wood effect designs in the Palio Rigid collection.

Sadie said: “I didn’t want the additional cost of paying someone to install new flooring in the girls’ room and the landing. Then I came across Palio Express by Karndean and was delighted to discover that, even as relatively DIY novices, we could fit the flooring ourselves without any fancy tools.”

After comparing several full-sized samples in her home, Sadie opted for Palmaria from the Palio Rigid range. The authentic knot and grain patterns provide a characterful look full of texture and interest while the subtle whitewashed finish balances the pure shades of her colour palette.

Ideal for DIY installation

Palio Rigid is designed to fit over most existing hard floors or uneven subfloors and is quickly fitted together with a 2G click-locking technique.

As Sadie explained: “The rigid core format was incredibly simple to fit. It was really easy to clip together and we only needed a utility knife to cut it. We remembered to mix up the planks from each box for a natural look and laid out the floor before we clicked the planks together to make sure we didn’t leave ourselves a narrow bit at the edges. Then we used spacers to mark out the required 5mm expansion space around the edges of the room and a rubber mallet to gently tap each plank tightly into place. Finally, we glued colour matched scotia to the skirting boards to cover the expansion gap.”

Flooring that steps up to the mark

Sadie concludes: “The carpet was so stained and grubby but now the girls’ bedroom is super pretty and the hallway room feels much bigger and lighter. In fact, we loved the new flooring so much we decided to fit it in our bedroom too!”

Palmaria is the palest design in the Palio Rigid collection and is ideal for pastel shades or cool neutral whites. If your colour scheme has shades of yellow look to the collection’s warm oak designs or, if you prefer the latest bold palettes, the darker chocolate designs will set off deep blues and greens to perfection.
